As you may have noticed by now the sites hosted on this server are temporarily down as we recover from a critical hardware failure. The good news is that no one's data in their home directory was lost, but the bad news is that the contents of everyone's INBOX at the time of the failure was. We also lost the drive containing the authentication files, so everyone's password will need to be reset.
It's no consolation, to be sure, but such is the life of those relying on a free service hosted on antique hardware. We all knew this was going to be an issue eventually.
One good thing to come out of this was the donation of a new server that has significantly better redundancy than the previous. For one thing, all the disks are now part of a RAID array. I have to thank a friend for that.
The entertaining aspect of this was the method of failure. It's not often that you get to witness concurrent failures. Not only did the system disk fry, but both CPUs went thermal as the bearings on the heat sink fans bound up. I think this one is down for good.
So, where does that leave you, the users? I have your accounts built, and I am once again spooling mail for you. What I'll need from you (for those that have other e-mail accounts) is an e-mail to acorliss@nevaeh-linux.org containing the e-mail address I was hosting for you and some kind of identifying information that I can use to confirm your identity. For instance, if you've created some custom personal folders to organize your mail you can tell me the names of them. If you remember when you first opened your account you can tell me that as well.
With something to confirm your identity I can set your password to something random (which you can change on your own at will) and you can resume using this service.
For those of you who don't have another e-mail account, please give me a day or two and I'll set up a web-based form where you can submit that information to me that way.
Thank you for your patience. I hope to have this server fully functional this week.
